Hyundai Sonata 2.0 CRTD CDX Auto

The Sonata has found little favour since the all-new version was launched in 2005. To be fair, it was only available with a thirsty and slow 2.4-litre petrol engine, so potential customers weren't blessed with the widest choice. Step forward a brand new motor that should alter things. This 2.0 diesel, which will be the bestseller, still won't be an instinctive company car choice. The engine's a bit rough when it's cold, but the gearbox is the real weak link. The automatic is slow to kick down and the engine struggles to haul the car's bulk along. The very average 224lb ft and sluggish 'box don't combine at all well, and are inadequate for motorway driving; while 0-62mph feels a lot slower than the claimed 11.6 seconds. Another nail in the auto's coffin is the fact that it's £1,000 more than the manual - which is the one to go for. There are plus points. The Sonata's huge inside and comes with satnav, climate control and leather trim for £19,000, but this still isn't enough to save it.
