Though the Kia Spectra was released in the 2000 model year, the Kia Spectra5 did not appear until 2005. Taking over as the name for the hatchback version of the vehicle, the Spectra5 is called the Cerato in Korea, the birthplace of the model. Initially, two I4 engine choices were offered, as well as the selection of either a manual or automatic transmission. Praised for its forward thinking design, the Kia Spectra5 has quickly become a bestseller for the maker.
In 2007, the Kia Spectra5 received a complete makeover. Changes included a refined exterior with a more aerodynamic profile and updated front fascia. Also featured is a newly restyled front grille. Though sales have been moderate, the manufacturer has opted to do away with the model in the next few years. The Kia Soul will replace the Spectra5 in the manufacturer's lineup. The general consensus among critics is that the Spectra5 has been outdone by other contemporary models both in design and reputation. So, in order to combat the disparagement of the Kia name and the old badges that go along with it, the maker has decided to implement name changes and new models to hopefully turn the tide with the American buying public.
Although the Kia Spectra5 had a short life, Hollywood came calling during those years and featured the ultramodern model in many films and television shows. The hit ABC series Desperate Housewives gave a role to the Spectra5, including a cobalt blue model that could be seen through the window in a scene. Desperate Housewives also highlighted the Spectra5 when one of the main characters chased after another actor driving the vehicle. The comedy show, Reno 911!, also used the Kia Spectra5 in an episode, using it as a background prop parked on the side of the road. Feature films like the live-action remake of the Transformers cartoon, suspense thriller Cloverfield, and the teen comedy Superbad have also used the Kia Spectra5 in scenes.
Though Kia plans to replace the Spectra5 with the Soul, U.S. News & World Reports named it one of the best models for the 2008 model year in the wagon category. This is causing some consumers and critics to scratch their heads as to why Kia is still going along with the impending discontinuation. While questions have been raised to the maker, Kia has yet to release any information about a possible continuation of the model based on new, positive interest in the Spectra5.
