The Toyota Matrix compact wagon was introduced for the 2003 model year in America and quickly enticed consumers with its affordable price and all purpose functionality. This car appealed to those who wanted a vehicle that had the gas mileage of a compact, the utility of a small SUV and sporty styling. The compact 5 door hatchback was available in 3 trim levels-Base, XR and XRS-all with the same 1.8 liter inline 4 cylinder motor. Both the base model and the XR were available with either front wheel drive or all wheel drive, while the XRS was made available with front wheel drive only. The interior was close to ultra modern with lots of metallic trim and many upscale features such as air conditioning, cruise control, premium stereo and antilock brakes were standard features. A hidden storage compartment under the floor and folding rear seats allowed for a flexible cargo area.
The 2004 model arrived unchanged, but for 2005 the Matrix had an attractive new front bumper, grille and tail lights to enhance the exterior. 2006 was also uneventful in regards to significant changes for the Matrix.
The 2007 Toyota Matrix models arrived absent of the sporty XRS trim and the discontinuation of the all wheel drive feature. Although these two features were initially appealing, according to Toyota's market research American's were much more inclined to save on the initial purchase price and willing to forego the sport image and all wheel drive. What remains is a very affordable car that suits the needs of most individuals and families seeking a feature rich, safe and nimble vehicle with a flexible cargo area. There are two trim levels available now, the Base and the XR. The XR is equipped with a keyless entry and power windows and locks. Option packages include 17" aluminum alloy wheels, a sun roof and a track modified suspension. The Matrix achieves impressive gas mileage with its 1.8 liter four cylinder engine that delivers an ample 126 horsepower. The ride is smooth and the Matrix maneuvers easily, and the interior is comfortable and inviting making this car as much of a joy to drive for the daily commute as it is on longer trips.
