The Toyota Camry Solara was introduced in 1999 and was distinguished from the regular Camry lineup by its unique plunging roof line, rear spoiler, 16" alloy wheels, bold front and rear fascias and deeply accented sides. In 1997, the Camry was redesigned and the two door coupe was discontinued. Consumer demand for a sporty coupe encouraged the introduction of the Solara. The Camry name did not appear on the exterior of this midsize coupe; this vehicle instead was identified with the Toyota symbol with a Solara model name emblem, although it did share the identical mechanical platform as the Camry. The sporty distinction between the previous two door sedan versions of the Camry and the new Solara was also apparent in the heightened performance facilitated in part by a tightened suspension that also resulted in more responsive steering. The two available trim styles-the SE and SLE-offered buyers a choice of a four or six cylinder engine with either automatic or manual transmission and two different degrees of comfort and convenience features with two corresponding price levels. Promoted as a fun to drive sporty coupe with the comfort and practicality of a mid size car, a soft top convertible version of this four passenger car was introduced for the 2000 model year.
The 2007 Toyota Solara is available as an SE, Sport of SLE model. The base model coupe SE is well equipped and affordable, while the sticker price of the Sport and SLE correspond with the additional comfort, convenience and luxury features and increased horsepower in models with larger engines. There are two engine sizes from which to choose; both delivering respectable gas mileage and power. All three trims are available with either a 2.4 liter 4 cylinder or 3.3 liter V6 engine, excepting all convertibles which are only available with the V6. Coupes are designed to seat five passengers, while the rag top seats four. Recent upgrades include a unique contemporary style instrument panel, side curtain and side impact airbags and a premium stereo system with MP3 jack and six disc CD changer. Toyota's reputation for quality and reliability are accurately presented in the agile and fun to drive yet sensibly and attractively designed Solara.
