Kia Sorento

The Kia Sorento debuted in 2003 to minimal applause. Kia had been assigned the slot of cheap cars that are cheaply made. However, since its induction, the Kia Sorento has gained both buyer appeal and better quality. The Sorento was Kia's first attempt at a compact SUV and continues to bring in high dollars for the Korean maker. Known now for its adaptability both on and off road, the Sorento has changed what makers consider an affordable SUV. In the five years since its birth, the Sorento has undergone a few changes. Originally, the SUV was available with a 3.5L V6 which only produced 192 horsepower. However, in 2007 Kia gave the Sorento a 3.8L V6 that boasted 262 horsepower. Nevertheless, the 2007 model year only offered a 5-speed automatic transmission. Also, it was not until 2007 that Kia introduced a standard anti-lock brake system. Two trim levels have been available since the Sorento's inception, the LX and the EX. The LX has always featured power windows and locks, keyless entry fob, and MP3 player hook-up, and two rows of seating for up to five passengers. The EX is the higher trim with more lavish features. Leather seating has always been standard on the EX, as well as a sunroof and heated side-view mirrors. The Sorento's exterior has not changed extensively. Now available in a sports edition, the Sorento can be fitted with roof rails and a tow package. The exterior is still a sleek modern design that lacks excessive frills. Kia has always offered the Sorento in either a 2WD or 4WD package. J.D. Powers claims that the Sorento is ranked highest in customer satisfaction because of its superior 4WD performance capabilities. Now the Sorento is marketed as a mid-size SUV that gets five stars in crash test ratings. The price continues to be among the lowest in its category at $21,695. Plus, Kia has continually offered a better warranty than its competitors. A 100,000-mile warranty is virtually unheard of in a market where people rarely even retain ownership of vehicles for that long. In the short time that the Kia Sorento has been on the market, it has had both its ups and downs. Initially, Kia had to overcome its American reputation for being poor-quality vehicles. Once that barrier was crossed, the North American public took to the Sorento and have admired its capability, handling, and low price ever since. This is why Strategic Vision gave the Sorento the Total Quality Award for Best Medium SUV Ownership Experience in 2007. If a person knows anything about cars, they know that you need only ask someone who owns the car to find out if it is any good. Kia is counting on that.
