The Kia Rio is basically a standard sedan and has been since its inception in 2000. The Kia Rio's no frills appearance has both attracted and turned off some buyers. However, the affordable price has always taken center stage and won over consumers. The Rio took over for Kia's Pride in its 2001 lineup. It was available in both a 4-door sedan version and the increasingly popular 5-door hatchback. While in the United States the Rio 5-door hatchback was called the Rio Cinco, in other countries the car had varying names as well. Either a 4-speed automatic or 5-speed manual transmission was available in the Rio. Since its birth, the Kia Rio has been competitively priced; however, at one time it was listed as the lowest priced new vehicle on the American market. With an economy that seems to get worse and worse as years pass, the Kia Rio has stayed true to its roots and continues to be affordably priced.
Since Kia has graced American sales lots they've endured harsh criticism from both critics and buyers alike. Most of that criticism has been based on the notion that being cheap somehow doesn't equate with quality. However, Kia has overcome the tribulation by continuing to release incredibly affordable vehicles that get excellent gas mileage. The Rio has expressed the Kia standard for almost eight years. The automatic transmission Rio can reach 25 city MPG and an impressive 35 highway MPG. Also, with a 2008 base price of $10,465, the Rio is hard to beat.
American buyers saw a new face for the Rio in 2006. Kia upped the ante with an improved 1.6L DOHC 4-cylinder engine that gets 110 horsepower. And while the size of the Rio swelled, the fuel economy got even better. Also in 2006, two trim levels became available, the standard Rio and the Rio LX. The LX trim simply added power windows and door locks, a compact disc player, and air conditioning. Kia also introduced a Rio5 that includes several infotainment features and cosmetic upgrades.
Even though the Kia Rio already gets excellent gas mileage, the maker has decided to develop a hybrid version. The concept rendering was unveiled at the Geneva Auto Show in 2007. The South Korean government task forces are the test drivers for Kia's latest hybrid advancement. Kia plans to release the Rio Hybrid in the United States in 2009. And of course, Kia also intends to price the Rio Hybrid much lower than that of its competitors. The ever-present comment that Kia drivers report is that the Rio is both affordable and fun to drive. Surely with the inception of the hybrid version in 2009, drivers will add that the Rio is also very environmentally friendly.
