Mercedes-Benz R-Class

The Mercedes Benz R Class W251 generation of crossover style vehicles, or combination mini van and SUV, were introduced in 2006 and made at the Mercedes plant in America. Although rather oddly unique in appearance, the 2006 model provided the utility and functionality of both an SUV and minivan, with high performance motors and all wheel drive and typical Mercedes luxury with seating for 6 passengers and fold down second and third row seats for additional cargo space. The R Class was available in 2 models, the R350, 3.5 liter V6 and the R500, 5.0 liter V8. An optional sport AMG appearance package upgrade added 20 inch tires with chrome wheels and sportier rear and front bumpers. The Mercedes Benz R350 is more than nicely equipped with dual zone automatic climate control, leather seats, 17 inch alloy wheels, wood trim accents and premium sound system with MP3 jack. The equipment included with the R350 is standard or enhanced for the R500. In addition to its more powerful motor, the R500 is equipped with heated leather seats, 18 inch wheels and the TeleAid communications system. Available options for both the R350 and the R500 models included a rear seat entertainment center, power liftgate, heated rear seats and a choice of two different sun roofs. The Mercedes Benz R Class was designed for a target market of frequent traveling empty nesters and more affluent late blooming families. To this end, the vehicle was extremely successful. For the 2007 model year, Mercedes capitalized on this marketing concept with the addition of two new models that would appeal to the same type of consumer, the R320 CDI with an economically friendly diesel engine and the high performance R63AMG with a 507 horsepower V8 and sport trim detailing. The initially well received R500 and R350 saw little change. Three rows of seats and all wheel drive are standard on all models. The well equipped, smooth riding and safety rich R Class is the luxurious yet practical alternative to a mini van, SUV or wagon.
