Based on Ford's popular SUV, the Explorer Sport Trac is a unique combination of pickup truck and SUV first released in 2000. Originally, the vehicle was generally looked upon as having an odd face; however, as the model years have progressed and more makers have unveiled similar models, the Ford Explorer Sport Trac has gained a wider fan base. Nevertheless, being of its distinctive style, the Explorer Sport Trac was more popular than Ford had initially anticipated, and some buyers were waiting for up to three months to get their hands on one.
The first generation of the Sport Trac featured a 4.0L Cologne V6 engine that generated up to 210 horsepower. Some buyers were disappointed that the model was only available with one engine selection. The four-door model comfortably seated five passengers in a roomy SUV interior, but the addition of a plastic composite truck bed gave the Explorer Sport Trac the versatility of a pickup. The 2003 model year brought about the removal of the Explorer badge from the exterior of the model. While technically Ford still referred to SUV/pickup as the Explorer Sport Trac, the maker decided to focus more on the Sport Trac element of the model.
In 2007, a brand new Ford Sport Trac was released, and it brought with it a bigger engine, improved handling, and two new trim levels. The engine was upgraded to a 4.6L modular V8, and the all new four-wheel independent suspension gave the Sport Trac a more comfortable ride. The XLT trim level provides mid-level accommodations, while the Limited trim features high-end luxury additions.
Several different variations of the Ford Sport Trac have been planned and then scrapped by the maker, but the upcoming model years are promising to bring about big changes for the Explorer Sport Trac. A high-performance edition is in the works, as well as a several new additional packages.
With the Ford Explorer Sport Trac's interesting profile, it's no wonder that many movies and television shows have opted to use it both in the background and as a prominent prop. The films Blood Gnome, Melinda & Melinda, and Agent Cody Banks all featured the Sport Trac either parked or driving the background of a scene. Other films like Bringing Down the House, Mr. Brooks, and Tremors: 3 all gave the Explorer Sport Trac a prominent role. Television appearances range from Prison Break to 24 to HBO's Six Feet Under.
